Why are we called The 1911 Cafe?

Well, this is where history takes place. The 1911 part of the building we are located in was originally a school. It was called Brownshore first school, which later closed in the mid 1980’s. It was then sold to the local parish council. It became and still is a community centre. It was built in 1911. If you look at the front of the building, there is a stone dated block. We added the cafe inside, and hey presto, the 1911 café was born. James’ husband John chose the name. He was one of the last set of pupils who went to the school. The large room was used as class rooms. The area by the counter was the cloakrooms. Some people tell us that in (around) the 1950s this was the dinner room. The kitchen as it is now were originally toilets. The whole red brick building was the original school where many of our customers now came to school. The rest of the building consists of extensions. These extensions were added in the 1960/70.

The 1911 Cafe LTD is at The Essington Community Centre. It is located on Hobnock Road, Essington, Wolverhampton, WV11 2RF.
